The modern.toronto is a not-for-profit foundation exhibiting contemporary abstract art. The objective of the gallery is to bring ambitious international art to Toronto not previously seen in this city.
The modern.toronto complements Toronto’s existing institutions and makes a notable contribution to the city’s art scene.
"Writing about the need for a "new religion" in 1938, in response to "the new Nazi and Soviet religion," which he found was as "oppressive" as "the old traditional religion," Piet Mondrian declared that the only truly "new religion is for those capable of abstraction." The "new art" of abstraction is "free of all oppression," and as such "life's purest expression." It "grows out of inner life...strengthens us where reason cannot." the modern.toronto, a new museum of abstract art, is a testimony to this conviction, and serves to remind us that abstract art continues to be as daringly alive as it was when Mondrian made his statement eighty years ago, and continues to do psychic good."
